Rock genre conventions

Rock and roll originates from the 1950s and took inspiration from many different genres such as R'n'B and country. The genre has a lot of different sub-genres and has a lot of conventions that are incorporated into their music videos.

"Rockstars" have a "could care less" image to maintain and that is done perfectly in their music videos. To accompany usually anti-establishment lyrics, certain conventions are very prominent. For example performers will have messy hairstyles with dark clothing to match their badass devil may care attitudes.

Performers in the rock genre will often have tattoos and piercings all the while sporting make up. Rockstars often wear eyeliner to give their eyes a dark look. If not wearing black clothing, performers from the genre can wear more extreme clothing, often fitting into a character of some sort.

Rock music videos will often have some kind of storyline to them and the video will follow that story providing a visual aide. In their videos there are usually lots of shots of the band playing instruments as well as group shots of the band playing together as if the audience is attending a concert.
