The progression of music videos

The invention of cinema opened many doors for the music industry, providing songs to have videos to accompany them. Music videos have been around since the 1920s, although, they were very different then to how they are now. An example of an artist from this time period is the Blues titan, Bessie Smith who made a short film to accompany her songs. These films would include a recorded performance of the artist, capturing all the necessary shots to make it look like they're performing live.

Ultimately, it's the advancement in technology that has made the music industry, and it's videos, what they are today.

Over time, different technological advancements paved the way for more opportunities for the music industry. One of the biggest breakthroughs in terms of promoting artists was television. Talent shows that we know today such as the "X-Factor" and "Britain's Got Talent" have been around as early as the 1950s. For example, shows like "Opportunity Knocks" featured a variety of singing acts, helping artists to break past the confides of radio and burst into the limelight.

By the year 1975 there was a massive breakthrough in the world of music videos in the creation of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. The song is a unique masterpiece that acts as a marking of a new era, not only in music, but in video. The song featured different effects such as mirroring images and reproducing them across the screen whilst featuring more than one voice. Although this seems like a fairly easy and in no way a grueling task, for the time the video was created, it was advanced. The new era of video was marked by Bohemian Rhapsody and it revolutionized the music industry
forever.
