Survey

After releasing the video, I put a survey up on a website for listeners to use and leave feedback on our production.

Evaluation

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our group was assigned the task of creating a music video for our latest media project alongside a digipak of the song's album cover and a poster to advertise the video. Our group created a music video to the song "Should I stay or should I go" by The Clash. This song is a part of the Punk genre and thus, my ancillary texts followed the same codes and conventions. This was a decision I made when creating my poster and digipak in order to appeal to the same target audience.
A long lasting convention of the Punk genre is the ideology of not caring. This was a key feature of the genre that we focused on when filming our final piece and so it only seemed natural to focus on a similar style for my ancillary texts.

My poster follows the same codes and conventions as my video due to the picture being used as the cover. The picture that I used was taken directly from the music video itself showing me holding fingers up to the camera. Not only does this portray the "devil may care" attitude that is promoted by punk rock, the picture is also a unique capture which cannot be found any where else. This choice of image was used in order to promote the punk genre whilst also generating an interest in what the image stood for due to its peculiar nature. I also used a dark filter over the image whilst using a bold red text as the title. The colour scheme is very dark and grungy, another convention synonymous with punk rock. This was then combined with the large, bright red writing in order to be eye catching when passing. Alongside these features I put quotes of people's opinions on the poster. All quotes painted the "album" in a very positive light in order to further convince the audience that the product is worthwhile.

My digipak was similarly executed when coming up with ideas for its design. All images other than are taken directly from the music video that the digipak has been created for. This was a technique used to promote an interest in the video by giving the audience snippets of what the video features and what they could be watching if they were to purchase the album. Also featured on the back of the digipak is information on how to support the album on social media with information relating to Facebook etc. My main idea was to generate as much of an interest in the video as possible through the packaging. Because of this, I chose some of the more odd and intriguing screenshots from the video. The images also have next to no correlation. This is directly linked to the style of the music video as our piece is purposefully very hard to get lost in. This fits in with the careless and even reckless attitudes that are constantly displayed through the punk rock genre. The same confusing and party-like randomness of punk that is featured in the video is also featured on the digipak. For the front cover of the digipak I used a very visually similar image to that of my poster used to promote the video. This was a technique used so that the audience would be able to dircetly link the two ancillary texts with ease. This means that both texts are working simultaneously, promoting each other as well as the actual film at the same time. The front cover follows all the same conventions as the poster, maintaining its eye catching traits. All writing on the digipak is placed onto a dark background in order for the audience to be able to easily read the contents of the album as well as the title easily. These are the two main areas that the audience will be looking at in regards to the digipak and so these areas seemed like they had to be the most eye-catching. This is why so much effort was put into making both clear to read.

Digipak

I made a digipak for the album that our song would be on. It's lit.

Editing

The editing of our film was fairly simple due to the experience that our whole group has attained over the course of our media studies journey.
Our group's ability to edit the film was obviously more advanced than it had been in previous projects. This much was evident due to the short amount of time it took to fully edit the piece. In only a few days, we went from having several, un-chronological clips to having a full music video put together exactly how we imagined.

Filming day five

After finishing shooting the main body of the music video, our group was now left with the task of getting lip-syncing shots alongside instrumental shots. The group used a local stage in order to get this footage.

The result of the shots were videos of the group members playing the instruments and singing along to the music. However, due to the nature of improvising when using the guitars, the shots still seem rather jovial and unserious. This was very fitting for the genre as well.

Filming day four

On our final day of filming, the group filmed bits of footage around the restaurant in order to create a "making of" video for our blogs. Whilst doing so, some of the footage we caught was funny enough for us to save and use as part of the main body of the music video.

A lot of the new shots were impromptu and were used to fit around the rest of the structured, storyboard shots. We decided that the careless nature of the video emulates the punk genre perfectly. Fitting a narrative in with nonsensical shots of the group having a good time, in tune with the young inexperienced nature of punk rock.

After adding the shots of the group messing around and enjoying ourselves, our group was finally looking at enough shots to edit together to make a full music video.

Filming day three

By the third day of filming, the bulk of the filming inside of the restaurant was complete.  Although setbacks such as camera technical issues were a contributing factor to our group taking its time, the main reason is because we had so much fun making the video.

We managed to get the shots done outside of the restaurant on the street all on the first take. By the time we were filming for the third time, our group understood exactly what we had to do in order to be as efficient as possible.

Filming day two

We suffered a major setback on the second day of filming as we found out that our camera's SD card was corrupted. As a result, this meant that only around half of the footage we created.

This was incredibly annoying in some ways because our group had spear-headed our first day of shooting, setting a standard for the rest of the filming. When we found out the SD card was faulty it effected our motivation and focus.

However, on a positive note, we had to re-shoot a few scenes that, in my opinion, improved the second time round as we spent more time going over the shots.

Filming day one

The group arrived at the restaurant for 7PM on the first night of filming, As expected, out first day of filming was slower paced as we set out the shots we planned on using.

We did encounter a few issues on the first day such as recognising that there were too many people unrelated to our project in the immediate vicinity of the filming. This created a major distraction when trying to get everyone in the room to concentrate on one scene.

Our group, however, did manage to get a decent amount of footage filmed on our first day of shooting among the setbacks.

Update 3

While many of our inspirations for our music videos theme came from more popularised films such as "The Good The Bad and The Ugly". However, more vintage and lesser known films were also used as a source of inspiration when setting up the poker scenes in our video. Our group took inspiration from films such as "The Last Challenge", a 1967 Cowboy Western film. The film features scenes in which the characters are playing card games around tables.

We also looked at the old Cowboy Western film called, "Tall In The Saddle". This is another film that shows card games between men living in the frontier. As opposed to The Last Challenge, the film is in black and white and focuses more on shades and bleak contrasts as opposed to the more colourful film before it.

Update 2

Today we worked through issues with the camera and its SD card. Due to complications, several shots and scenes have been lost from the camera and it's memory card. Because of this, some of the time that was supposed to be used shooting a performance of the song we're using was instead spent re-establishing these shots in order to re-capture the work the group had done previously.

Although we've had a setback, the music video is finally starting to look official.

Update 1

Today we did most of our non-performance/non-instrumental shots on set. We spent the majority of our time choosing which angles to use for each shot when establishing a narrative at the beginning of the music video.
The hope is to be able to perform our dance and actual performance segment of our music video and to start editing straight away afterwards.

Planning song ideas

From the beginning of the planning period for our music video our group has had several clashes in terms of musical interest. The first song that we decided to plan our video on was called My kind of woman by Mac DeMarco. This idea fell through, however, as half of the group didn't feel attracted to the song, creating a stale working environment at times.
After this there was much deliberation on what the song should be. Other ideas for songs to do where "Black Magic" by Fleetwood Mac and "Should I stay or should I go" by The Clash.

Eventually our group came to the conclusion to use the song "Should I stay or should I go". We decided on this song as it was a piece that everyone in the group could enjoy as well as prompting lots of creativity.

Storyboard

Whilst our group was in discussion today we concluded that we were going to draw any ideas that came into our heads and decide whether or not said ideas would be suitable for the song and how relevant these ideas are, too. The ideas put forward will assist us in deciding which direction we are aspiring to go in such as the mood of the video. For example the bottom left box of the picture on the left giving connotations of a tragedy and sadness along with the one on the middle right.

Our group have all agreed that our music video will be a mixture video combining performance and narrative ideas in the music video. This will include shots of us playing instruments all the while telling some sort of chronological story to follow.
The ideas for this video has been heavily influenced by the music video for our song choice, so we have decided to copy this as it adheres to Goodwin's theory of the music video matching the lyrics featured in the song.
