The importance of props

Props help lend a sense of character to the figures using them. They become a part of the character's personality, and can even serve as a means of identification. An example would be Harry Potter's trademark round rimmed glasses. The glasses serve as indelible extension of the character, and the character wouldn't be the same without them.

Movie props can also contribute to conveying the time and place of the narrative. Using a prop that is related to a specific time in history such as a long sword from the Middle Ages or an MP40 from the Second World War can help the audience engage with the film, that period of time would become more real.

Props can also be used as a tool by the actors involved in the film, setting the scene for not only us but them too. If an actor is playing the role of a gangster, the use of a prop Tommy Gun would help them to fit into the role more readily, creating a real feeling in the role.
