Pop Genre Conventions

A lot of pop music is generally focused on appearance as opposed to substance. Artists in the pop music industry often follow the same pattern in their music videos, maintaining their style of mainstream clothing, big name brands whilst seeming content and happy throughout. This is parallel to the style of pop magazines such as "WE POP" as they feature a flashy, bright and colourful layout to promote a good vibe with several big names in the industry on the cover in a seemingly enjoyable state of mind.

Pop songs are generally upbeat and involve beats that are suited to dance to. Pop songs have an intended audience of teenagers and young adults as their music videos feature people of the same age. In the music videos, it's common to see young people partying and dancing in some kind of glamorous eutopia which is something that these teenage viewers want to experience.

Artists in the pop genre are often very sexualised, especially women, in order to lure in their audience. Artists like Rihanna are often very sexualised in their videos, wearing a small amount of clothing and dancing in a very seductive manner. The audience of teenage males are supposed to find these women attractive in their videos, luring them to watch the video and, in turn, listen to the music. The lack of clothing also helps to maintain the sexual and glamorous party lifestyle that the genre promotes.
